Description

To continue our Coffee Learning Journey, and get an "outsider's perspective" of the gourmet coffee industry, members of our team from Newtown Starbucks visited a local Roaster; Redding Roasters Coffee Company in Bethel, CT.

We watched Bill (Master Roaster/Owner) roast a small batch of coffee from Papa New Guinea.  It is so cool to listen for both "pops" as the coffee roasts and to watch the beans change from green, to yellow, to cinnamon, to a dark brown.  He described his roasting process, the origins of the different coffees he purchases, showed us the different stages/types of beans, told us the history of his business, and let us sample his coffee.

What a wonderful experience!  Bill was extremely welcoming and shared his many years of experience. It is always great to look outside the box for more knowledge about coffee.  I encourage every partner to find a local roaster and see if you can visit their operation.

Have an open mind and learn: it can be a lot different than Starbucks.  Also remember that Starbucks has a very contolled environment to produce the perfect Starbucks Roast....some roasters may not have this environment, or have established their own guidlines.....the point is that it is different.
