Description

The Seattle Dragon Boat Festival is a Starbucks sponsored event that raises money and awareness for recovering cancer victims. Come join us as a participant (racer) or as a dock assistant. Either way, it's a very fun and fulfilling way to get outdoors and enjoy great team camaraderie.

Chinese history refers to the 2,000 year old story of the statesman and poet Qu Yuan. After urging his king not to sign a peace treaty that he believed to be a deception, he was expelled from the kingdom by the unscrupulous king. Humiliated and tormented over living in exile, Qu Yuan chose to drown himself in the Miluo River as a protest to political corruption. While he was drowning, local fishermen rushed out in boats to try and help. To try and stop his body from being eaten by dangerous fish and water dragons they beat drums and thrashed the water with their paddles. To nourish his weakened spirit, the fisherman threw bags of rice into the river.

Today, 20 paddlers sit side by side in a 45 foot canoe and race for 500 meters against other teams while a drummer beats a drum to carry on the traditions of feeding Qu Yuan's spirit. Join the great tradition of Dragon Boat Racing in Seattle and feel thrill of racing and team work.

Most jobs at the Festival are typically 4 hour shifts but can be any length of time. Any assiatnce is appreciated. Some jobs such as assisting paddlers getting into the boats require some physical strength and the ability to swim (just in case you fall in the water!). Other jobs such as the Information Booth and crowd control require just a "smile".
